Barry Town United is set to face a new-look Welsh football season, with the Cymru Premier League expanding from twelve clubs to sixteen. The current 12-club league has been in place for 16 seasons, separating into two conferences once clubs had played 22-games before the play-offs. Six clubs have been promoted to the Cymru Premier this Summer, including Trefelin from Port Talbot, Cambrian United from the Rhondda, and Ammanford from Carmarthenshire. Fixtures are due to be released shortly, with the new league season beginning on the weekend of 31st July – 2nd August. Barry Town will only play in one cup competition – the JD Welsh Cup, after the FAW decided not to continue with the League Cup competition. The club has a strong history in the League Cup, having won it five times, including a purple patch of four consecutive wins between 1997 and 2000. The FAW decision was based on the low priority given to the competition by clubs, but fans will have mixed opinions. And with the new season approaching, Barry Town's manager will be looking to make the most of the expanded league. But the club's fans will be eager to see how the team performs in the new format. So, the upcoming season promises to be an exciting one for Barry Town United. The club's players will need to adapt quickly to the new format, with each club playing each other home and away in a traditional league, making up thirty matches from August until the end of March. The final league and play-off positions will be determined in a shorter phase two in April next year.
