Barry Town FC will experience a very different Welsh football season in 2026-27, with changes in league and cup competitions. The Cymru Premier League expands from twelve clubs to sixteen this season, with each club playing each other home and away in a traditional league. This will make up thirty matches from August until the end of March, before a shorter phase two in April next year determines the final league and play-off positions. The current 12-club league has been in place for 16 seasons, separating into two conferences once clubs had played 22-games before the play-offs. Six clubs have been promoted to the Cymru Premier this Summer, three from each of the regional second tier leagues, while Llanelli and Bala Town were relegated. From the Cymru South, Trefelin from Port Talbot, Cambrian United from the Rhondda and Ammanford from Carmarthenshire were promoted, while Llandudno, Airbus Broughton and Holywell Town are the three clubs to earn promotion from the north. Fixtures are due to be released shortly, with the new league season beginning on the weekend of 31st July – 2nd August. Another change this season is that Barry will only play in one cup competition – the JD Welsh Cup. After 35 seasons, the FAW have decided not to continue with the League Cup competition, most recently won by Barry in February against The New Saints. In total, Barry were five time winners of the cup, including a purple patch of four consecutive wins between 1997 and 2000, three of which saw Barry defeat Bangor City in the final, twice on penalties. The FAW decision was based on the low priority given to the competition by clubs, but fans will have mixed opinions, as the cup gave a wider range of clubs the opportunity to reach the closing stages and enjoy the occasion of a cup final, Barry having reached the semi-finals on three occasions in the last five years.
