Cambrian United, newly promoted to the Novira Cymru Premier, are set to face Barry Town in a crucial encounter. The Rhondda Valley club, formed in 1965, has made a strong start to their top-flight campaign with four points from three games, led by manager Liam Williams and captain Kyle Jones.

History

Cambrian United, formerly known as Cambrian & Clydach Vale, were founded in 1965 and joined the Welsh Football League in 2005 after merging with Clydach Vale Boys and Girls Club in 2002. They reached the First Division by 2007-08 and won the Welsh League Cup final in 2019, defeating Cardiff Metropolitan. The club rebranded as Cambrian United in 2024 and secured promotion to the Cymru Premier after a top-two finish, becoming the first Rhondda Valley team in 20 years to reach Welsh football’s top flight.

Cambrian have started their Cymru Premier campaign strongly, earning four points from three games. Their opening match ended in a 2-1 defeat to Barry Town United, but they drew 1-1 with Briton Ferry Llansawel and defeated Flint Town United 1-0 thanks to a late Liam Eason penalty. They currently sit 10th in the table.

Manager

Liam Williams, entering his third season as head coach, has guided Cambrian to 47 wins in 78 games, averaging 2.01 points per match. His side has scored 166 goals and conceded 95 since his appointment. Williams was named Cymru South Manager of the Month in December 2023 and led the club to promotion last season.

Captain

Kyle Jones, 29, is in his first Cymru Premier season after a 130-appearance career in Cymru South. The defender, who joined Barry Town in 2023, returned to Cambrian in 2024 and took over the captaincy after Ceri Morgan’s departure. Jones featured 26 times in the 2023-24 Cymru South season, helping the club reach the Welsh Cup final and secure a top-six finish.

Key Player

Liam Eason, 28, is making his Cymru Premier debut after a prolific Cymru South career. The forward, who scored 19 goals in 29 appearances during Cambrian’s promotion-winning 2023-24 season, was named Cymru South Player of the Season for two consecutive campaigns. His 11 goals in 12 games for Llanelli Town during the January transfer window highlighted his form.
