The Cymru League season kicks off on Friday with the great debate set to continue on whether Cymru North and Cymru South are actually more exciting than the main event - the Cymru Premier League. Attendance figures at tier two grounds last season certainly back up that argument. The New Saints have taken the Cymru Premier League trophy for the past five seasons after Connah's Quay Nomads managed to break the monotony by winning back-to-back titles in 2020 and 2021. Under the Welsh Premier League banner, TNS topped the table 12 times to add to their one League of Wales crown in 2000. That means the Shropshire side, who won by 22 points last time out, have been crowned champions 18 times in the 34 years since the League of Wales first kicked off in the 1992/93 campaign when Cwmbran Town were the inaugural winners. Barry Town boast the next best record with six title triumphs between 1997 and 2003. Bangor City, who are back in Cymru North this season, followed up their back-to-back wins in 1994 and 1995 when Nev Powell’s side took the trophy for a third time in 2011. Rhyl were winners in 2004 and 2009 while Llanelli took the crown in 2008. TNS, managed by Craig Harrison, are involved in European action tomorrow night before their season starts with a trip to Penybont on Sunday. Nomads will again give it a good go and John Disney’s side also begin their campaign on Sunday at home to Caernarfon Town. They’ve been making a case for the defence with a pair of new acquisitions at Airbus. With preparations for a return to the top flight drawing to a close, the Wingmakers have announced the signing of Jake Carroll, who has spent the last two years at Chester. Goalkeeper Carroll came through the ranks at Buckley Town and Nomads, while he was a part of the Airbus Academy before his move to Chester. In addition, Brandon Diau has signed a deal to bolster the defence. A product of Bayern Leverkusen’s Academy, Diau moved to Britain a decade ago and he signed for Kidderminster Harriers as a centre forward. Following a switch to his current centre back role, Diau has played for Flint Town United and Colwyn Bay in the Welsh pyramid, as well as Icelandic side Vikingur Olasfsvik and Portadown, in Northern Ireland. Manchester United, meanwhile, have announced the signing of young goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea. The 19-year-old did not make a senior appearance for the Swans but went on loan to Nomads last season, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances. The Wales youth keeper, the son of former international Martyn Margetson, made his Under-21s debut for his nation against Belarus in March. Nomads will face Trefelin at home on October 30th, currently 16th in the table. The season is set to be an exciting one for the Cymru North clubs, with several teams looking to challenge the dominance of the Cymru Premier League.
